1897 Map of Alaska Showing Routes to the Klondike Gold Fields

“Map of Alaska & Surroundings, showing the Klondike Gold Fields, and Routes to the Mining Camps”

Color-printed map, 1897, published to accompany a salesman's copy of "Gold Fields of the Klondike and the Wonders of Alaska" by Ernest Ingersoll (present), also with a four page guide for the salesman where he is encouraged to describe the map to his customer as follows, "Here, Mr Brown, is the largest and finest map of Alaska, showing the gold fields, that has ever been made. It has been made by special arrangement with the United States Government from a new map just issued, and is therefore the most accurate of any that can be made", with horizontal and vertical folds as issued (now flattened); quite a few tears along folds, now backed onto an archival backing sheet
Neatline 16 1/8 x 21 1/2 inches
Sheet 19 x 24 inches

In addition to the advice given to salesman quoted above, the following is also stated; "(Take pains to point out the places of interest that will interest your customer, and explain to him that in reading the book he will find the map absolutely essential to a proper understanding of the subject.) This map, Mr Brown, is superior to maps that are being sold at 50 cts. apiece. (When you come to close the order you should make a strong point in impressing your customer with the fact that he gets the map free with the book, and the price for the book is very low without the map being considered.)"

The enthusiasm for the subject had also apparently spread to the typesetter, who has the author Ernst Ingersoll named as "Earnest" on the title-page, which was corrected in the regular editions.
