With regard to the dating of this map, Taiwan is indicated in coloring as being a Japanese posession, which did not occur until 1895 and the end of the First Sino-Japanese War. Sakhalin Island, north of Hokkaido, is marked as being only partially under Japanese control, and while Japan and Russia fluctuated in jointly controlling the island, it had been solely in Russian hands since 1875, possesssion only again being shared with Japan in 1905. Korea is marked as 'Joseon Dynasty' (which ended in 1891) in the left map but on the right is titled 'Korea', and is not shown as being a Japanese posession. Korea became a protectorate of Japan after the conclusion of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905, and by a few years later is usually marked on maps as being a full Japanese possession.
